Finished the above illustration this morning for the Chronicle, and below is another illustration from last week for US Catholic.
Month: October 2014
A week of semi-normalcy
AHMM, Baker Book House, Boston Globe, ChronicleHE, River StyxFinished up one of the book projects early last week and started work on a sample illustration for one of the upcoming book projects (pictured further down this blog entry). Besides the ‘publishing work’, I also had a series of quicker turnaround jobs to keep me busy throughout the rest of the week. The above illustration (and the accompanying spot below) were for an upcoming issue of GreenPrints. Below that is a color illustration for the Boston Globe that I finished up on Thursday.
On Friday, I finished up a story assignment for Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine (pictured above). Today I had a few rough sketches to do for some upcoming projects this week. Below are a few of the rejected sketches for a Chronicle assignment, plus a story assignment for River Styx.
New Krampus for 2014
Self PromotionI did my first Krampus image for a promotional postcard back in 2010. In the past four years I’ve revisited this holiday theme three additional times. I’ve used each of these as promotional postcards, and I think my favorite response happened last year, when a contact wrote me asking to be taken off the mailing list because she found the image so “disgusting and disturbing”. I’ve also been offering these on various bits of merchandise (greeting cards, mugs, tee shirts, etc) at my Zazzle Store where they are some of my best selling items, especially during the holiday season.
Pictured below are the four Krampus images I’ve done over the past few years. And in case you are unfamiliar with the whole “Krampus” myth, HERE is an informative website explaining the story behind this unusual holiday character.
Roughly Speaking
UncategorizedIt has been a while since I’ve posted any rough sketches to this site. I’m usually pretty secretive about roughs, as it is sort of like standing out in the street in your underwear, with all your secrets bared to the world. I’ve spent a lot of time on rough sketches this week for various upcoming projects, so I thought I’d take a handful of them to post here, with minimal explanation of what they are for.
I managed to finish up one of the book projects I was working on for the past month or so, earlier this week, and I found myself with a little extra time to work on personal projects. I’ve started work on this year’s Holiday Krampus Card (some of my earlier Krampus designs are available at my Zazzle Store on various bits of merchandise), and below is the rough sketch for this year’s design (I’ll be posting the finish in a few days time). My goal this year was to portray Krampus in a little ‘cuter’ vein than I have in the past, but from the looks of things so far, he’s looking even creepier than last year. I’ve also been working on some designs for my band’s new CD. Our next CD will be a collection of ‘Murder & Death’ themed songs, so I am toying with the idea of a ‘gravestone’ motif, and below is a preliminary design.
