Summer’s end and the Holidays are right around the corner

Jukejoint Handmedowns, Llewellyn

Well, another summer is at an end. Spent most of the past week working on sketches for another large book project, and am hoping to have the remainder of it done by next week. Devoted Friday to working on the latest Witches’ Companion book cover for Llewellyn (I’ve done these for the past 6 or 7 years, and they are always challenging and fun, while still maintaining a similar look and feel from year to year).

Also found time this week to work up a quick birth announcement stork, since my bandmate Nate had his first child on Thursday. And since the band is starting work on a Christmas EP to hopefully have completed by this Holiday season, I started work on a layout for the CD cover. (I’m hoping to actually have this one done as a photo, but this is the layout I’m hoping to achieve — the back cover will be the same grouping from the back, and the guys will be holding matching gift wrapped bourbon bottles)

Home again

US Catholic

Back home from our Colorado trip, and spent the past few days finishing up the sketch phase of an 80+ page book project, and I’ll be starting on sketches for another on Monday (unfortunately, like the other project for this client earlier this summer, due to contractual stipulations, I won’t be sharing these illustrations on this site for some time to come). In the meantime, I finished up an illustration for US Catholic (doing the sketch on a laptop in South Dakota, and the finish this afternoon here at home). Getting pretty busy this week/weekend trying to both get ahead to allow for a short road trip to Colorado next week (my son’s band Bonzo Terks is on tour out there, and we’re hoping to catch a few shows, and do some tent camping and disc golfing). A new book project involving 75 or so interior illustrations is in the ‘sketch phase’, plus I’ve had a few additional magazine projects this week, and the usual trips over to Lansing to take care of my Dad. (oh, and almost forgot, had a major repair job to my riding mower this week to also keep my hands full). The above illustration was one I finished up this morning for the American Bar Association. Below is a fiction piece for Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine I did earlier in the week, and below that, a spot illustration for the Chronicle of Higher Education. Now if you’ll excuse me, I got to get back to work.

Oh yeah, and one more thing: Our band’s cd finally went to the manufacturer this past weekend, as well as another cd for some other local musicians, who I did some cover artwork and design on. Hoping to have them in hand when I get back from our trip.
