Busy Week

Barrons, Llewellyn, US Catholic

Nice to have a busy, hectic week for a change, filled with a variety of projects (halfway through the week, with more to do by the weekend). Had a couple new interesting projects come my way over the weekend (more on those in the future). Working on my annual ‘witches’ project for Llewellyn, plus a piece for Barrons and an unusual portrait assignment for US Catholic. Meanwhile, started¬†on recordings for the Jukejoint Handmedowns upcoming CD release, and have joined the Kent Philharmonia on bass, who are going to be playing Beethoven’s Ninth¬†Symphony for their spring concert this year (which means LOTS of practicing, as it is the most difficult piece of music I’ve ever laid eyes on).

Fading Summer

Llewellyn, WSJ

Summer is fading fast, and with it comes one of my favorite late summer assignments that I’ve been doing for the past 8 years. This is a cover image for a book of Wiccan ‘digest’ put out by Llewellyn. I’ll likely be doing some interior black and white illustrations later in the year for the same book. Below is an assignment I had for the Wall Street Journal this past weekend.

Witchcraft

And here we are in February already. Still buried in snow here in West Michigan, and I’ve now got three books that I’m currently working on (and again, not able to share any of the work here in this blog until publication). But in the meantime, I’ve been also working on several shorter deadline projects. The black and white images above and below are all for the newest edition of the Witches Companion book for Llewellyn. I believe this is the seventh book in this series that I’ve been involved with (I usually do a cover in the late fall of the year, and a portion of the interior illustrations around the first part of the year), and I usually enjoy these projects very much, being a bit of a change of pace from the usual bill of fare around here.

Below is a cover and interior spot for Farm Futures Magazine that I did last week, and below that, a piece for US Catholic, and a piece for the Wall Street Journal.

Summer’s end and the Holidays are right around the corner

Jukejoint Handmedowns, Llewellyn

Well, another summer is at an end. Spent most of the past week working on sketches for another large book project, and am hoping to have the remainder of it done by next week. Devoted Friday to working on the latest Witches’ Companion book cover for Llewellyn (I’ve done these for the past 6 or 7 years, and they are always challenging and fun, while still maintaining a similar look and feel from year to year).

Also found time this week to work up a quick birth announcement stork, since my bandmate Nate had his first child on Thursday. And since the band is starting work on a Christmas EP to hopefully have completed by this Holiday season, I started work on a layout for the CD cover. (I’m hoping to actually have this one done as a photo, but this is the layout I’m hoping to achieve — the back cover will be the same grouping from the back, and the guys will be holding matching gift wrapped bourbon bottles)

A black and white world

Green Prints, Llewellyn

Been working exclusively in black and white the last several days, and with the ‘Amish Girls’ book interiors starting this week, it looks like I’ll be working in black and white for much of the coming few weeks. Above is an illustration for Green Prints, and below are the last three remaining ‘Witches Companion’ interior illustrations.

Also this weekend, began the recording process for the upcoming Jukejoint Handmedowns CD. May begin working on the final design for the CD artwork this week should I have any free time.
